After being here for several days, I finally realized that people were using Slang. First, it felt very awkward, but interesting at the same time. A few days later, I started working at a convenience store. While working there, I came across many different people. Not being fluent in English was already a problem, but then I also had to face a very different language, Slang. Often times, I could not understand what customers were asking due to unfamiliarity with Slang.

As mentioned above, learning English was one of my wishes and now the only way of communication, which gave more motivation to learn the language. At the time, I completely misunderstood him and thought he was just asking what was above me. However, I was very fortunate, as he was a regular customer, who decided just to laugh. He finally realized that I was unaware of Slang and explained that he was asking how I was doing.

At the time, I felt very nervous and embarrassed, but I took it as a new learning experience. Finally, I believe that working as a cashier helped me tremendously with learning English. After working a few years, I decided to go back to school to advance my education.

While attending classes there, I had an opportunity to learn some advance English from Ms. I believe, their classes helped me gain and improved my English skills. Also, those classes taught me how to write sentences and develop a paragraph, which encouraged me to write short papers to improve my writing skills. As a conclusion, learning English as a second language has been very challenging, but having some basic knowledge before moving to the United States made it a bit easier.

Till this day, I am constantly learning new vocabulary and Slang words. Also, I think using my time effectively and by going an extra mile helped enormously. Finally, I believe, my motivation to advance my education and career helped me come this far. Nief, Ron, et al.

The primary focus of ESP programs is ESL courses tailored to the specific learning and language use needs of students, most of whom are educated adult learners.

In addition to EAP, ESP programs include English for occupational purposes EOP programs, which concentrate on the teaching and learning of either English for workers in non-professional contexts vocational English or English for professionals, such as English for business and economics, English for science and technology, English for medical purposes, and English for legal purposes.

Adult immigrants and refugees interested in learning ESL find themselves taking courses in adult education programs. Located in community centers, schools, and churches, these programs respond quickly to the changing needs of fluctuating immigrant populations and diverse adult learners.

Most of these students are working adults who need to acquire basic skills in English. Others are preparing for citizenship or trying to complete a general education diploma. Even the teaching and learning of English has already taken a stable place in the education system of Bangladesh.

In the changing global circumstances, it is assumed that in future English will claim even more attention in our national level of education. Present state and status of English in Bangladesh: In the constitution of Bangladesh, Bangla is declared as state language and there is no mention regarding the status that is to be given to English.

During Pakistan period, English enjoyed the status of official language in this territory. It was used in the administration, higher education and as a link language between educated speakers of Bengali and Urdu. Now in Bangladesh, English is taught as a foreign language in the curriculum.

Since , it is introduced as a compulsory subject and remains so until 14th grade in the national curriculum. Outside the government funded institutions, there are innumerable language centers, English medium schools and a good number of private universities who teach English according to their own curriculum and syllabuses.

At present, there are no training institutes exclusively for English teachers in Bangladesh. The usually followed methodology for classroom language teaching is Grammar-Translation method. In the examination system ranging from primary to tertiary level, the topics of prime focus usually include questions based on prose and poetry, grammar items, reading comprehension, translation, paragraph writing, letter writing and composition writing. Besides, the evaluation of the contents of English text books shows mat students' ability of communication through language is given secondaryconsideration whereas thematic or knowledge of society is given the primary consideration.

As a result, students are often deprived of the varieties of language inputs necessary for their everyday life of communication. Moreover, the students listening and writing skills are not at all measured in our testing system. However, communicative system has been introduced at secondary and higher secondary levels.
